Karl Benz invented the first internal combustion engine car in 1886, launching the automotive era. He paired a four-stroke gasoline engine with a modified three-wheel carriage. Nearby, Gottlieb Daimler, unaware of Benz, built the first four-wheel car months later. Daimler’s company, DMG, began selling one of the first cars, becoming a key player in the automotive market. In 1901, Emil Jelinek commissioned a car designed by Wilhelm Maybach, named the 35hp Mercedes, a major success for DMG.
In 1926, due to foreign competition, a declining Frank, and sluggish sales, banks urged DMG and Benz’s company to merge, forming Mercedes-Benz, honoring both founders. The three-pointed star, symbolizing engines for land, air, and water, came from Daimler. During World War II, Mercedes-Benz shifted to heavy trucks and machinery, laying the foundation for vehicles like the Unimog and G-Wagen. Post-war, the company quickly resumed car production.
