Timing Chains are Everything to this Range Rover Sport

The extraordinary driving experience offered by the Range Rover Sport makes it a popular choice for those wanting to cross rivers, trek through mud, and hug the Okanagan twisties. Yet, this vehicle switches into a more sophisticated, luxurious ride at any given notice.

It really doesn’t feel like a 2.5-tonne SUV; exceptionally well balanced, smooth, and controlled even when pushed to its limits.

To top it all off, this 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Supercharged 5.0L V8 offers a refined, supercar turbine-like engine with the quietness of a simple background hum.

So when this Land Rover Sport’s owner heard a strange noise coming from the engine coupled with running rough, it was time to see what was going on.

Motor Werke’s team of European auto experts dove into the disassembly and found that the timing chains were no longer keeping tension. The timing chain tensioner and guide were wearing into each other, causing too much slack. Too much slack on a timing chain may lead to a slapping noise, especially when first starting the engine. It can also cause the Check Engine Light to come on as the engine may run rough, hesitate or even stall.

The photos below show how the tensioner and guide were sitting together.  The poor quality of metal used for the tensioner and guide resulted in wear marks on the two components. The manufacturer has updated the components with better materials to help avoid premature wear. To prevent this from happening again, we installed new timing chains and updated the guides and tensioners for this Land Rover engine.
